Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
