Arrangements for Trump-Putin Summit Shelved Days After Budapest Negotiations Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has declared.

This past week Trump stated he and the Russian president would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to address the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was not "required".

The administration did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Background Context

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar suggesting Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president supported a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and EU officials to freeze the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a series of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with Trump last Thursday preceded reports that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The conversation concerning the missiles had turned out to be a "strong investment" in international relations", he remarked.
