Folly and Monarchical Hubris Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet
This episode commenced with a isolated photograph, arguably the most significant ever captured of a individual from the royal household.
In the frame appeared the Earl of Inverness, standing closely beside a teenage girl, while an associate smiled conspiratorially in the backdrop.
Absent that photograph, shot at a party in 2001, few would have credited the claims of a young woman who stated she was trafficked across the sea and obliged to have perfunctory intimate contact with a member of the monarchy?
A strange, telling move by someone who had publicly stated to have not heard of her, asserted he could never have had sex with her, and yet paid a large amount of monarchical money to avert a long-delayed legal case.
Over a Decade of Disgrace
Against this backdrop, talk of the royal family acting firmly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This controversy has continued for the majority of 15 years since that photograph, and another snapshot of Andrew strolling pleasantly with a convicted sex offender came to light.
- Hubris: For what duration did his family members, maybe even his parents, know that Andrew was so self-entitled?
- Dubious Friendships: They must have understood, if his aides and the law enforcement were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable companions given he unabashedly hosted them to palaces.
- Financial Extravagance: If the monarchy did not know about his intimate behaviors, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with taxpayer funds.
Travel were printed in public records: private aircraft travel from the palace to a country club and back again in time for lunch, exclusive air travel instead of scheduled services, all for the benefit of "the travel enthusiast".
Existence of Entitlement
Additionally the presumption which expected deference when he walked into a space or the extreme awareness about his designations used on his official documents in messages to his friends.
He managed to escape consequences while his mother, who inexplicably spoiled him, was still alive. The Queen did at least remove him of official roles and military positions in the aftermath of his ill-fated and, it is now clear, mendacious media appearance six years ago.
Latest Events
Just in the last two weeks that events sped up, following the publication of biographical works giving more troubling particulars of his actions and that of his associates.
Additional revelations have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could get away with lying about his interaction with a notorious figure.
People (and the media) were far in advance of the royals. There was no one of any consequence to defend him, a consequence of all those years of arrogance.
Institutional Fears
The more astute monarchical figures realized that. The primary concern is to transfer the monarchy, if not as heretofore at least complete and untarnished.
They have spent the last 190 years trying to undo the legacy of previous monarchs, proving they are beneficial, accountable and attentive to their citizens.
He was placing all that in jeopardy in an time when deference and privacy is no longer enough.
The Fallout
Eventually, the famously uncertain sovereign was pressured additional. There was little choice. The palace had surrendered command of the account.
Currently the loss of honorifics and the continued and lifetime social disgrace that will hurt Andrew the most.
- Downgrading: Lowered to just a commoner
- Historical Precedent: The initial royal to forfeit his designations in recent history
- Military Service: Particularly painful given his service in the Falklands war
He is still a royal advisor, theoretically able to stand in for the king, and he is still in the lineage to the crown, but neither of these will actually occur.
Coming Developments
Do individuals he meets still defer to him? Could they still make mistakes and call him Prince? Will they even say Andrew,
Naturally, he is not retiring to a common area, but to the royal family's vast estate at Sandringham.
In that place, he will be provided by the sovereign with one of the royal residences and given some sort of financial support.
It is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a minimal lease for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit distant, but even so it may not be far enough.
Unresolved Issues
The situation continues. There are still documents in the possession of American legislators to be disclosed.
- Parliamentary Interest: Could legislators request additional information
- Financial Investigation: Or scrutinize the improper use of public money
- Legal Possibility: There may even be a law enforcement inquiry into his conduct
Maybe for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the crown is limited. The statement from the palace was clearly that the stripping of honorifics was what the monarch, and especially other senior royals, desired.
A Shift in Position
No more illusion that Andrew was doing it voluntarily. And, notably, the short announcement showed clearly that the monarchy were supporting the complainant's narrative of occurrences.
Additionally, for the premiere occasion they ultimately showed concern for the victims: "The measures are considered essential, despite the fact that he persists in refuting the allegations against him."
Finally it is presumption, selfishness and inactivity that will kill the institution. In his foolishness, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that lesson.
