Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
