Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a female high school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.
The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.
Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and vigilante groups" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
