The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
