The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
