Underwhelming The Software Giant's Earnings Report Erase More Than $70 Billion Off Worth, Fueling AI Bubble Anxiety.

The tech firm's underwhelming quarterly results have slashed more than $70bn from the value of the software and data company co-founded by Trump ally Larry Ellison, intensifying escalating fears of a speculative bubble in AI-related stocks.

Steep Share Price Fall Comes After Sales Shortfall

Stock in the company fell sharply by eleven and a half percent in after-hours trading after it disclosed a disappointing 14 percent increase in sales to $16 billion in the previous quarter, while simultaneously revealed plans to ramp up its artificial intelligence investment by around $fifteen billion dollars.

The business recorded weaker-than-expected quarterly revenues for the period ending in November, with sales at its core cloud computing division expanding at a more modest rate than anticipated, at thirty-four percent.

Investor Jitters Over Investment and Debt

Shareholders were further let down by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent increase in revenues from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were alarmed by the company's elevated forecasts for AI investment. It now anticipates capex to jump by 40% to $50bn, with the vast majority of the additional spending directed toward building cloud infrastructure.

This aggressive investment strategy is set against a ballooning leverage, with Oracle's corporate debt having increased by twenty-five percent over the past year to reach $99.9bn.

"Honestly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it came to confirm worries around substantial AI spending, funded through debt, with an unclear timeframe for profitability," noted a market analyst.

Wider Sector Implications and Industry Concerns

Continued optimism about the promise of AI technology has led to a sharp rise in company valuations in the past year, but there has been a rising number of cautions from policymakers and executives who warn equity prices could plummet if investors ended up being disappointed by the development or commercial uptake of AI technology.

While Oracle has become an important tech player creating enterprise solutions for major corporations worldwide and has in recent years found strength in cloud computing, analysts point to increasing concerns about how reliant firms are becoming on circular funding within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle said that its measure of contractual revenue rose by 440% over the past year. However, analysts were wary when it was revealed that these contracts were propelled by large deals from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are high-quality customers, it will not allay fears that big tech's AI investments are self-referential, which leaves it vulnerable to a loss of market faith," stated a research director.

"Overall, robust contract growth was not enough to calm anxiety about AI and the massive amount of investment spending needed by companies to develop AI capacity."

Broader Sell-Off in AI-Related Stocks

Additional technology stocks subsequently fell in extended trading following the Oracle results. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock declined by 1.3 percent.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock fell by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares tumbled by 7.7% on Thursday.
