The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
